Here’s some firehouse trivia from the excellent Wikipedia:

In popular literature, firefighters are usually depicted with Dalmatian dogs. This breed originated in southern Europe to assist with herding livestock and run along with horses, and in the days of horse-drawn fire apparatus the horses were usually released on arrival at the fire and the Dalmatians would lead/direct the horses to a safe place to wait until the fire was out. Dalmatians also filled the role of protecting the horses feet from other dogs as the fire equipment was being transported to the fire scene.

Firefighters often refer to law enforcement officers as “blue canaries”, tongue in cheek, because one can evaluate a hazardous material incident from a distance by watching the police—they always drive right up to the scene, and if their cars don’t stall, it’s not an oxygen deprived atmosphere. Then they jump out of their vehicle, and if they don’t die, it’s not a poisonous atmosphere. Then they start lighting flares, and if there isn’t an explosion, it’s not an explosive atmosphere, and if the car doesn’t melt into a puddle, the atmosphere isn’t corrosive, and the firefighters can move in.

Another tongue in cheek reference is the “New Jersey Taste Test”, where a firefighter or police officer walks to a hazardous material, dips up a little with their finger, then tastes it. See “blue canaries” above.

The “Hazmat Rule of Thumb”: If you can hold your thumb up and still see the incident, you are still too close.

Installing smoke detectors is the smart thing to do. It’s also the safe thing to do.

Follow these tips to help save your life & property from fire:

– For minimum protection, install a smoke detector outside of each bedroom or sleeping area in your home. Better, install detectors on every level of your home.

– Do not remove batteries from a smoke alarm just because it goes off when you are cooking something. Most alarms have a reset button – use it.

– Keep your bedroom doors closed while you are asleep.

– Keep your smoke detectors properly maintained. Test them once a week to ensure that the detectors are working properly.

– Every Spring and Fall when you change your clocks, remember to change your smoke alarm batteries. Use only the type of batteries recommended on the detector.

– Develop an escape plan and review the plan with all members of the family frequently. Be aware that children and elderly people may need special assistance should a fire occur. Establish a meeting place outside the house for all members of the family to ensure that everyone gets out safely. When fire occurs, get out of the house and use a neighbor’s telephone and dial 911.

Nobody expects a fire. But it’s very important to have a plan just in case there is one. Fire can happen anywhere: in your home, apartment or place of business.

In case of a fire, what you don’t know can hurt you. Keep in mind, fires don’t always happen to someone else. ESCAPE PLANS WILL DIFFER FOR EACH TYPE OF BUILDING! IT’S UP TO YOU TO PLAN THE PROPER ESCAPE FROM YOUR PARTICULAR BUILDING.

Hints and Tips:

HAVE A FIRE ESCAPE PLAN
Have a family meeting to discuss what to do if there is a fire. Practice your plan.

USE APPROVED WINDOW GATES
Only use approved window gates. Do not use a padlock which will prevent your escape from a fire.

DECIDE ON A MEETING PLACE OUTSIDE OF THE BUILDING
By deciding on a meeting place outside and away from the building, you will know if everyone has gotten out safely.

SEND THE ALARM
Dial 911 to report a fire. Use a neighbor’s phone or a cell phone.

WALK QUICKLY, DON’T PANIC
Feel the door on your way out with the back of your hand. If the door is hot, do not open. Close any doors behind you to slow the spread of fire.

USE THE STAIRS
Don’t use an elevator. It may stop and trap you.
Try to place one hand in contact with the wall. This may prevent you from getting lost.

STAY LOW AND GO
If there’s smoke, escape by staying very low to the ground where air is cooler and smoke is less dense.

OPEN WINDOW IF TRAPPED
Open window at top to let out heat and smoke; and at the bottom to breathe.
If you cannot get out, wave a sheet out the window. If you become trapped, stay calm and go to the nearest window or door, if possible. When firefighters are searching for trapped persons, they always start at the perimeters of a room. Elderly persons may have been taught to head for the bath or shower because of the availability of water – This is bad advice as most often it is the smoke that kills people – get out or if that is not possible get to a window/wall.

DON’T GO BACK
Do not go back into a fire for anything! Your life is your MOST valuable possession

We are always looking for new volunteers to help our fire company.

Don’t Panic! You don’t have to have that deranged will to go running into a burning building to join us (although we are always looking for active firefighters too). Everyone can help out in their own special way – and we really appreciate any way that you can help.

Membership to the fire company runs at a massive $6 per year. This membership fee entitles you to attend our monthly meeting and make a difference in how the fire company is run.

Apply for membership by contacting one of the existing members, or completing our membership application form.

Monthly Meetings are held on the 2nd Monday of the month at 8:00pm at the New Tripoli Station. For $1, you also get to eat (great food, laid on by the Ladies Auxiliary) after the meeting!

Members are voted on at the next monthly meeting after your application. It is VERY rare to not be voted in, but it is a By-Law.

Social Members

We are always looking for members to help out in the running of the fire company. Be it helping with fundraising activities, helping with food preparation, helping with the facility care and repair, we would love to have you on board. It is a very rewarding and fun hobby to have.

Fire Police

If you don’t feel up to, or can’t, be an active firefighter, but still want a rush of adrenaline, the Fire Police would love to have you help out. The Fire Police do an amazing and essential job of protecting the public and protecting the firefighters. The job takes dedication and commitment, but it’s very rewarding and greatly appreciated by all (except the odd irate motorist who’s more concerned with getting home for supper than going on a detour).

FireFighters

Whether you’ve served with other fire companies, you are completely new to this and are looking for excitement and a challenge, or a “junior” still at high school, we are always looking for active firefighters.

Firefighting is fun, it’s exhilarating, it’s challenging, it’s the ultimate adrenaline rush, but it’s also very hard work. You become part of a team like no other. On the fire ground, we depend on each other for survival and the camaraderie generated from that is second to none.

As an adult firefighter, you will be expected to regularly attend (obviously we can’t all attend all the time, but we expect a level of commitment) the weekly training sessions.

The weekly training takes place at 6:30pm every Monday at the New Tripoli Station. The training usually runs until 9 or 10pm, but it’s fun as well as educational.

After attending regularly for approximately 6 sessions, you will be issued with a pager and some old turn-out gear (firefighting gear). You will then be able to attend calls with the rest of the crew.

After one year of regular attendance at training and calls, you will be fitted out with your made-to-measure turn-out gear.

Before you can enter a scene structure or wear the SCBA gear, you must take at least the “Essentials of Firefighting” course, which is offered, for free, by LCCC and many other local organizations. There are a lot of courses available for firefighters and you are encouraged to take as many as possible. If any of them require payment, it is fully reimbursed by the fire company upon completion of the course.

Junior Firefighters

At the age of 16, with your guardian’s consent, you may join the fire company as a junior firefighter. You will be trained in firefighting the same way that the full adult firefighters are.

The only restriction is that on calls, we cannot legally allow you to be as active as a full firefighter, but your role is just as important in a support capacity. The fire scene is also where you will learn the most by observation.

At 18, you will be able to serve as a regular firefighter.

Come along on your own, or why not get a couple of like-minded friends to join up with you – It’s fun, it’s exciting and it’s extremely rewarding!

Fire Police are an important part of our community. Correctly termed ‘Special Fire police’, they have limited powers of law control to enable them to protect the public, protect the firefighters at a fire scene and provide traffic and crowd control.

Pennsylvania is one of only a few states to recognize Fire Police.

The Fire Police often bear the brunt of the public’s frustration and are trained to calmly deal with abusive and sometimes aggressive persons who complain that they are delayed or detoured because of a road closure. Please bear in mind that these volunteers are just that, volunteers, and would rather be going about their day-to-day activities than be stood out in the middle of the road, or freezing/boiling hot days with 7000lb “missiles” coming at them, only to be abused by a frustrated driver.

Our firefighters are 100% volunteers. They come from many walks of life and constitute a wide cross section of our community. Many are firefighters from other departments/states that have moved into our community and wish to keep up with the valuable skills they possess.

Below you can see the roster of firefighters and also learn a bit about their “other” everyday lives in the biography section.

The tools and equipment, as well as the protective personal clothing that are used by our firefighters is primarily paid for by fund-raising events and donations from the general public. It costs approximately $6000 to outfit a firefighter to enable him/her to perform the most dangerous job there is.
